    Learning & Outreach

45 min. Hosted online via Zoom

Is your New Year’s resolution to learn more about cinema? Do you want to discuss the latest Cinematheque screenings with fellow cinephiles?

Introducing Deep Focus,” a new interactive lecture series presented by Learning & Outreach at The Cinematheque. Inspired by the World of Wong Kar-Wai” retrospective, screening at The Cinematheque in December and January, our inaugural event will explore the unique directorial style of Hong Kong’s best-loved auteur. An interactive visual lecture will introduce Wong’s signature stylistic techniques and artistic influences, as well as the cultural and historical factors at play in his highly evocative, aesthetically stunning, playful, and incisive cinema. A discussion and Q&A will follow.

Deep Focus: Wong Kar-Wai” will be hosted by Chelsea Birks, a self-professed WKW fan and The Cinematheque’s Learning & Outreach Manager. Chelsea previously taught film studies at UBC, SFU, Emily Carr, and the University of Glasgow. She has a particular interest in transnational Asian cinemas and has taught Wong Kar-Wai’s films in a number of classes and seminars.
