Our Stories to Tell
In Person: Loretta Todd

This program honours the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit veterans who put their lives on the line because of their dedication to their nations, families, and the land they have been connected to since time immemorial. Cree Code Talker, directed by Alexandra Lazarowich (Cree), centres on Charles “Checker” Tomkins, a nehiyawewin speaker who became a code talker, and his role during World War II. Forgotten Warriors, directed by Cree-Métis filmmaker Loretta Todd, shares the stories of Indigenous soldiers who heroically fought in World War II, like Sergeant Tommy Prince, Canada’s most decorated Indigenous war veteran. Despite fighting for the freedom of others, discrimination continued when the Indigenous soldiers returned home where they faced inequality and the illegal seizure of land.
