“A tender and moving portrait.”
Sheffield DocFest
Arash Eshaghi’s award-winning documentary follows the life of an unnamed 80-year-old Iranian man who defies social norms through his passion for dancing in women’s clothing. A devoted family man and former drag queen, he performed on stage for decades until the 1979 Iranian Revolution banned such acts. Despite this, he continues to honour his passion by performing at private events and weddings, and in places such as senior centres and, most often, the privacy of his own home. In addition to crafting intricate garments by himself, he has assembled a collection of traditional women’s clothing from various regions of Iran, which he incorporates into his performances. This film explores themes such as identity, resistance, and the complexities of societal expectations, celebrating one man’s unwavering commitment to self-expression and the courage it takes to remain true to oneself in the face of oppression.
