VIDEO PRODUCTION

The Cinematheque didn’t shy away from the challenge. They embraced it. And because of that, so did the youth. Hands down, a hidden gem. A highly refined resource I wouldn’t hesitate to access again.

For over 15 years, the Cinematheque’s award-winning digital filmmaking programs have engaged elementary and secondary school students, community groups and teachers in learning how to create meaningful, high quality videos.  Fun, exciting and educational, our projects stimulate students at any level of filmmaking experience.  Respectful and experienced instructors bring our professional, mobile media lab to offer challenging experiences that push students beyond their own expectations in scriptwriting, shooting, editing, and sound design. Our programs:

  •  Guide new filmmakers in moving beyond clichés to find unique, creative and effective ways to tell stories
  •  Are participatory and hands-on, custom-designed to fit any subject, group and learning objective
  •  Emphasize quality over quantity through the creation of meaningful and powerful media.

If you’re interested in a video production program, contact us to discuss project ideas, rates and logistics. Funding is also available through a number of different school district and local funds, including ArtStarts in Schools (due in May and October each year) and the S’Cool Life Fund (due in January).

Please also be sure to check out our Resources page for classroom materials, videos, online tutorials and links for creating youth-produced videos in your classroom or community.

WORKSHOPS

Though our projects and workshops fall into many broad categories – experimental films, video rants and multi-media community art projects, to name just a few – below you’ll find profiles of our three most common project types. Crafting a short film is an exciting exercise in teamwork, creative collaboration and communication.  Ideas are honed into a clear message and a story, nurtured into a script, translated into storyboards, and then brought to life in images and sounds captured on video to be edited and sound designed into a cohesive and compelling story you and your students can be proud of.  All of our video production programs are custom-designed; for an amazing experience in storytelling and team-building, contact us to see how we can support you and your project.

From local portraits of homelessness to explorations of global environmental issues, documentaries share compelling stories, raise awareness and stir us to action.  Frequently, our most challenging and rewarding programs are in documentary film production, where new filmmakers start with a raw concept and end with a short film they can be proud of.   If your class, school, or community group would like to create a documentary about an issue or your own initiative, feel free to get in touch! Let us custom-design a program and show you how.

Alfred Hitchcock was famously quoted as saying, “Drama is life with the dull parts cut out of it.” And nowhere is this more true than in the Public Service Announcement, where in 60 seconds you can share an important message and keep your audience glued to the screen!  Among our most popular programs, many teachers, community groups and municipalities have asked the Cinematheque’s expert facilitators to guide teams through the creation of 60-second masterpieces. Let us know your big idea and we’ll help make it happen.
