Directed by Borys Lankosz (whose acclaimed debut feature Reverse was Poland’s entry in The Cinematheque’s 2010 EUFF), the first biographical documentary about Polish writer Stanisław Lem, author of Solaris, explores a host of mysteries and paradoxes. How did Lem, born to a Jewish family, manage to survive the Holocaust? What was his attitude towards communism and the Polish People’s Republic? How did he manage to keep up to date with international science and technology in 1950s Poland? Was he really an atheist? A well-crafted and multi-dimensional documentary … Adopting many different methods, from archival material and interviews to dramatizations of scenes from both his life and his works, Autor Solaris is a penetrating portrait of the artist, and sheds light both on Lem himself and on the social and historical forces that helped shape him” (Anthology Film Archives, New York).
