Audience favourites and award winners from the 2020 edition of the OIAF, North America’s largest and most important animation festival, are featured in this program of ground-breaking, smile-making, and head-shaking shorts. Showcasing some of contemporary animation’s leading international talents and brightest new lights, the ten exceptional works screening here include Canadian animator and UBC alum Anne Koizumi’s In the Shadow of the Pines, a moving retelling of the filmmaker’s relationship with her Japanese-immigrant father; Seoul-born, L.A.-based Kang-min Kim’s KKUM, a stunning black-and-white dreamworld that claimed both the festival’s Grand Prize and its Public Prize; and Slovak animators David Stumpf and Michaela Mihalyi’s humorous and absurd Sh _ t Happens, a film about, well, strange shit that happens.
