INTRODUCTION - NARRATIVE STRUCTURE - A GAFFER'S DIARY - THE USE OF SOUND IN THE FILM - CHARACTER STUDY - THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE POEM, THE PIED PIPER - THE USE IRONY IN THE MOVIE - MORAL DILEMMA

This guide is specifically designed to address the new Learning Outcomes in the English Language Arts, Social Studies, and Media Education curricula that deal with the visual media as a form of communication, and suggests ways in which traditional literary concepts may be taught through the medium of film.

The Sweet Hereafter is the story of a fatal school bus crash that rocks a small town, and the lawyer who comes to convince them that a financial settlement will heal all. The unconventional, non-linear narrative structure of the film is explored in this guide, as well as the use of sound in telling the story. It also touches upon the device of irony and the use of references to literature in order to add depth.
